I forbindelse med Xenia Koghilaki’s arbeidsopphold/residency i Bergen, inviterer vi til visning og samtale på USF Verftet.

Om prosjektet:

The starting point of Xenia Koghilaki’s research has been questions around : How can dancing crowds act as agents of practice and what kind of performative tactics can be developed upon this, especially for engaging into questions around corporeality, collectivity and resistance? In the frame of the residency Xenia focused on highly energised collective motion from the perspective of crowd rituals that arise within musical spaces. She focused on studio research, choreographically exploring the practice of moshing: the hardcore practice of crowd dancing associated mainly with the punk and metal culture. Together with Noumissa Sidibé and Irini Georgiou, they have been looking closely to moshing’s choreographic elements, approaching the space of the pit as a site of extreme dancing, a space of social cooperation and a site of corporeal and space negotiation. Xenia’s aim has been to explore, physical dynamics and embodied energies between bodies , developing choreographic strategies that can be practiced both on stage and on the social realm .

Xenia Koghilaki works in the field of performing arts as a dancer and choreographer. She holds an MA in “Solo/Dance/Authorship” (MA SODA), from Berlin University of the Arts (HZT-Berlin/Udk) and she has previously studied dance (National School of Dance) and architecture (Technical University of Patras) in Greece. She lives and works between Athens and Berlin. Xenia puts the body in the centre of her research interest while her practice focuses on challenging the triptych: power – knowledge – body.

She has presented work at Onassis Dance Days and Sophiensaele in the frame of Tanztage Berlin (“Bang Bang Bodies”), Studio ALTA in Prague (collaborative work “Nudes and Conspiracies”), Onassis New Choreographers Festival – ONC8 (the collaborative work “Besuch”), Arc for Dance Festival 11 and K-Gold Temporary Gallery (“JunkDance”), and elsewhere. As a dancer, she has worked with Kat Válastur (“Strong-Born,” “Diana, Even,” and “The FarNear”), André Uerba, the Chto Delat collective, the Porson’s Khashoggi company, among others.

She is a Danceweb scholarship holder of Impulstanz Vienna International dance festival (2021) and she has been awarded the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Artist Fellowship by ARTWORKS in 2022.
