With many of us in coronavirus lockdown we have been looking at possibilities of going into virtual spaces with Prøverommet. Since much of what Prøverommet is about is the gathering of energy we have decided to let go of the spring program, looking into the future and hopefully back on track in the fall. As we do want to offer whatever we can we are putting up a streaming with Nora Chipaumire who were supposed to be on the program of BIT Teatergarasjen the coming week with the two performances #PUNK and 100% POP.

#PUNK and 100% POP are two parts of a trilogy in which Nora Chipaumire explores one of the three sonic ideologies in each: Punk’s Patti Smith, Pop’s Grace Jones, and Rit Nzele of Congolese Rumba. Each performance paints a sonic and visual landscape, and equal parts dance, concert, performance, installation, and storytelling. Nora is a graduate of the University of Zimbabwe’s School of Law and has worked as a radio DJ in Zimbabwe. She’s been dancing all her life, but it wasn’t until her arrival in New York that she discovered her passion for contemporary dance and its liberating potential as a form of art. In the film to be streamed,"Noraby Alla Kovgan and David Hinton, we get an insight into the history of Nora.

Nora” is based on true stories of the dancer Nora Chipaumire, who was born in Zimbabwe in 1965. In the film, Nora returns to the landscape of her childhood and takes a journey through some vivid memories of her youth. Using performance and dance, she brings her history to life in a swiftly-moving poem of sound and image. The result is a film about family dramas, difficult love affairs and militant politics, which moves back and forth between the comic and the tragic, the joyful and the mournful. It is a film about a girl who is constantly embattled - struggling against all kinds of intimidation and violence - but who slowly gathers strength, pride and independence. Shot entirely on location in Southern Africa,Nora” includes a multitude of local performers and dancers of all ages, from young schoolchildren to ancient grandmothers, and much of the music is specially composed by a legend of Zimbabwean music - Thomas Mapfumo.
